The island is divided into 5 regions or conferences namely Western, Northern, Southern, Eastern and Central. Each conference is made up of at least 2 parishes that seek to develop the sport at every level in accordance with the mandate put forth by the National Association.

The Western conference is made up of Hanover, Westmoreland and Trelawny. The Southern conference, St. Thomas, Kingston, and St Catherine. The Eastern conference s includes Portland, St Thomas and St. Mary. The Northern Conference includes St. Anns and St Mary. The Central conference includes Clarendon, Manchester and St Elizabeth.

Western Conference

The conference is headed by president Barrington Flemming and hosts a mini league, a high school league and Division one club league. The mini program started in 2003 with some 12 schools in and around the Montego Bay area. It has since expanded to 14 schools. The high school league includes 9 schools at the under-16 and under-19 level. Cornwall College, ST. James High, Anchovy High, Muschette High, Merelene Ottey High and Green Island High are always the most competitive teams. Not withstanding the conference has managed to produce players of National team standard, namely Samada Samuels and Orlando Brown who have received scholarship to overseas institutions.

The club league is one of those old established leagues in the island and has been struggling in recent times due to financial constraints. At present the top club teams are Sunrise Blazers and Catherine Hall All Stars. Both have competed without success, in the National Play-off for a place in the National Basketball league (NBL).

The Central Conference

The conference is lead by President Michael Stephenson who is finding it difficult to establish a structured club league and development programme. The Conference has a very stable school league at the under-16, under-19 and schoolgirl level. The conference is considered to be the 2nd strongest conference on the island. Each year the national schools championship will see teams from the Central Conference in the finals. Some 16 schools are involved in the league at various levels. Old Harbour High, Manchester High, Knox High, Munro High, and Glenmuir High are considered the top school teams from the region.

The conference hosts a divisional club league that includes team from all three parishes. It has not been able to sustain the program; hence, several of its top players have had to migrate to neighbouring conferences to compete.
Efforts to effect a mini programme has proven futile but one is scheduled to commence in March 2005 in May Pen.

Northern Basketball Conference

The Northern Conference has abandoned its divisional club league and has established a night league for clubs. It participates in the High School League in 2 categories namely under-16 and under-19 boys.
The conference seems to be on the decline in terms of development due to its top teams, Mammee Magic’s and Buckfield United moved up to the NBL. The other teams have not been able to remain stable. It is now hoped that the return of the Buckfield team they will once again assist in getting the old club league restarted. Several players of high standard have emerged from the conference and are now on overseas scholarship. The players are, Hugh Robinson, Michael Stewastson and Daniel Rose. The conference is presided over by Vice-President Courtney Wallace since the resignation of President Mr. Winfield Murray in 2005.

The school league needs much improvement as only 8 schools participate. They were never a serious contender for the National Championship. The top school teams from the conference are mainly Ocho Rios High, York Castle High, Browns Town High and Charlemont High.

Eastern Conference

This is the youngest established conference on the island and perhaps the weakest. The conference is presided over by Ms Lorna Lawson who is challenged to find the necessary resources to put the conference on a strong footing. The conference has a club league but has not been able to sustain its school league due to the lack of participants. The only active school in the conference is Port Antonio High who is forced to compete with the Northern Conference teams. The top club within the conference is the Sunrise blazers.

A mini basketball program, which was established in 2002, is still in existence. Some 5 schools participate in the program.

The Southern Conference

The Southern Conference is lead by president Calvin Martin It is a well established conference that host nearly all the programs proposed by JABA. It carries a mini program, a high school program, a divisional league, a business house league and the National Basketball League. Some 50 schools participate in a very dynamic mini basketball program that covers both boys and girls in 2 parishes. At present the top teams are Holy Family and Dupont Primary. The mini program within the conference is practiced in Kingston and St Catherine.

The high school league encompasses all divisions, under-14, under-16, under-19 and girls open. The competition is very competitive as each year the championship trophy is likely to change hands. The conference can boast, having the National champion in nearly all divisions. The top boy teams within the school system are Calabar, St. Catherine High, Ardenne, Wolmers, Jamaica College and Kingston College. For the girls Ardenne, Holy Childhood and ST. Catherine High lead the way. Each year several players take up lucrative scholarship offers.

At the divisional level some 26 team participates in a very keenly contested league. The top team being the Charlemont Magics, Arnett Garden Rockers, Runnin Rebels and the Swift Suns. The Business House league is growing each year with some 12 participating companies from the Business Community of Kingston. The JUTC, THE Gleaner Stars, Digicel, Shocking Vibes are the main contenders.

The female club league is growing in quality with the influx of young players from the school league. The league of 9 teams has produced top class players, several of whom are now on scholarship and or have represented the country in international competitions. The top clubs within the division are the Lady Panthers, the Waulgrovian Bullets and the Metro Bells.
